Fanø – the Danish camping gem where the holiday begins on the ferry

Fanø – the Danish camping gem where the holiday begins on the ferry. Some destinations rely on theme parks, water parks and packed activity schedules to feel like a holiday. Fanø does the exact opposite. Just twelve minutes after leaving Esbjerg by ferry, you arrive on an island where beaches, nature, small villages and a slower pace of life take centre stage. And for many campers, that may be exactly what makes Fanø so special.

The holiday begins on the ferry

There is something special about islands. Perhaps it is the feeling of leaving everyday life behind. Perhaps it is simply the fact that you have to take a ferry to get there. Either way, a holiday somehow feels like it starts a little earlier.

On Fanø, that feeling takes about twelve minutes.

That is all it takes to travel from Esbjerg to Nordby. By the time the ferry docks, life has already slowed down a little and suddenly you find yourself on an island where the sea, the wind and nature set the pace of the day.

That is also what makes Fanø such an interesting camping destination. It is not about squeezing as many activities as possible into your holiday. It is about finding a place where you actually want to stay.

An island where the beach is the main attraction

If there is one thing that defines Fanø, it is the beach.

The island is famous for its long, wide sandy beaches stretching for kilometres along the west coast. There is room for almost everything here. Children can build sandcastles, run, search for shells and fly kites, while adults can enjoy long walks or simply sit and watch the North Sea.

The wonderful thing is that the beach does not feel like just another activity.

It feels more like the island's living room.

That is also why Fanø works so well as a camping destination. You do not need to plan every hour of the day. Often, packing a beach bag is enough.

Camping at a slower pace

Fanø has several campsites spread across the island, particularly around Rindby and Fanø Bad. The overall impression is that these campsites focus more on location, nature and atmosphere than on large attractions.

That may also explain why the island appeals to so many different kinds of campers.

Families find beaches, playgrounds, adventure golf and plenty of space to explore. At the same time, there is a calmness that many adults and older travellers appreciate.

It feels more like a place to stay than a place to tick off.

An island built for bicycles

Some destinations bring out the bicycles simply because there is room for them on the caravan.

And then there is Fanø.

Here, cycling almost seems to be the natural way to get around. Distances are short and cycle paths connect the island's villages and holiday areas. That means you can easily travel between the campsite, the beach, the villages and whatever adventure the day brings.

For families, it means freedom.

For adults, it means leaving the car parked.

And for everyone, it means slowing down.

Seals, dunes and nature playgrounds

Fanø sits in the heart of the Wadden Sea National Park, which is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nature is not simply a backdrop here. It is a central part of the experience.

Families will find nature playgrounds, forests and kilometres of sandy beaches. But perhaps the island's biggest stars are its seals.

In the southern part of the island, guided seal safaris take visitors out into the Wadden Sea to experience seals in their natural environment.

It feels like exactly the kind of adventure children remember long after the holiday ends.

Nordby and Sønderho – two sides of Fanø

Nordby is where most visitors first arrive. Here you will find restaurants, shops and the atmosphere of a small harbour town where life moves at a slower pace.

At the southern end of the island lies Sønderho.

Often described as one of Denmark's most beautiful villages, it is easy to understand why. Narrow streets, historic houses and a pace of life that feels almost timeless make Sønderho a destination in itself.

For many adults and older couples, it may actually be one of Fanø's strongest attractions.

This is not a place for rushed sightseeing.

It is a place for slow walks.

Why we think Fanø is worth the trip

Some destinations impress with their size, attractions and endless activities.

Fanø impresses in a different way.

Here, holidays revolve around beaches, bicycles, the sea, small villages and the feeling that you do not need to chase the next activity. It is a place where children can spend their days outdoors, where adults can slow down and where nature provides much of the entertainment.

Perhaps that is why Fanø feels like one of those destinations that many international campers have yet to discover.

And perhaps that is also why so many people end up staying longer than they originally planned.
