Rooftop tents look almost ridiculously simple. Park the car, open the tent and suddenly you have a bedroom with a view. No caravan, no motorhome and no ground tent on uneven soil. But behind the adventure comes roof load, extra height, wind resistance, ladders, condensation and rules that are easy to misunderstand. A rooftop tent can be brilliant, but it is still camping and sometimes rather more complicated than the photographs suggest.

There is something special about cooking outdoors while camping. It becomes even better when breakfast, lunch and dinner can all be prepared on the same large griddle. It expands the campsite kitchen, rescues leftovers from the fridge and turns a few simple ingredients into a meal that feels far more satisfying than another dry sausage from the barbecue.

At home, breakfast is often something you eat before the day begins. At a campsite, the same meal can suddenly become a small ritual. Coffee tastes better outdoors, someone walks to the campsite shop for fresh rolls and someone else tries to fry bacon in a dressing gown without waking the entire neighbourhood. But campsite breakfast does not need to be bigger, better or more complicated than breakfast at home. It only needs to suit the kind of morning you are actually having.

Reversing a caravan is rarely difficult because of the basic technique. The hard part is doing it after a long drive, with tired children, a narrow campsite road and neighbours who are definitely not watching while somehow noticing every movement. The answer is not more courage. It is less speed, clearer communication and being willing to pull forward and try again.
